Kindness and compassion is a trait that defines and shpes up the moral character of a person. A person is identified by the level of kindness that he holds. Kindness and compassion holds a very high position among the teachings of Islam. Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was a very Kind and compassionate person and deemed kindness and compassion as the primary traits that must be the mark of a Muslim. Is has been said by Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) “God is kind and likes kindness in all things” (Bukhari, 6601).
Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) practiced what he taught and believed that the hardest of the hearts will accept the teachings of Islam if dealt with kindly and honestly. The kindness and the compassion exhibited by our beloved Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) affected by hearts and caused people to enter Islam in the form of groups. Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) showed great kindness towards all of the people regardless of the way they treated him. It has been dais in the Holy Quran that:
“O Messenger of Allah! It is a great Mercy of God that you are gentle and kind towards them; for, had you been harsh and hard-hearted, they would all have broken away from you” (Quran 3:159).
The kindness and compassion of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was by no means limited to the Muslims. In fact it extended to every human being and every living thing. Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) once travelled to the city of Taif in order to spread the preaching of Islam. The people of Taif treated the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) with utter disrespect and started throwing stones at him. They continued to do so till they drove the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) out of the city.
Upon this incident the angel Jibraeel appeared before the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) and asked his permission to crush the ignorant people between the mountains. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) stopped the angel and instead raised his hands in the air and prayed to God to guide the people. It is the result of this kind act of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) that we see that many devoted Muslims come from the valley of Taif.
There are many incidents throughout the life of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) that manifest the kindness and the compassion in his nature. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) was especially kind towards the poor and the weak. He would regard them as the people who are facing a tough test in their lives and would help them any way possible. Anas who were the servant of the prophet said that the Messenger of Allah never scolded him for a task that he had not done.
Our beloved Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was kind not only to human beings but they were kind to all living things including animals and plants. The Beloved Prophet PBUH was kind to such an extent that he on the event of slaughtering an animal he would say “God prescribed kindness towards everything; so when you slaughter any animal, slaughter it well; when you sacrifice, make your sacrifice good. And let everyone sharpen his weapon and make it easy for his sacrificed animal” (Muslim, 5055).
