Arab spring was probably one of the biggest and memorable events of 2011 and it is still continuing. If we look at the entire series of events we will reach to a conclusion that there were broadly seven factors or causes responsible for such revolt or revolution which is known as the Arab Spring. Let us have a quick look upon some prominent causes.
Shortages & High Inflation
One of the main reasons responsible for Arab spring was a shortage of necessities and high rate of inflation. If you pick the economic statistics of affected countries you will find that there was clearly a shortage of food, electricity, raw materials, transportation and other necessities of life that gave rise to anger and restlessness among the masses. Here it is also worthwhile to mention that currently some major countries of Muslim population such as Afghanistan, India, Iran, Pakistan, Yemen are suffering from high inflation rate of 30.5%, 11.5%, 13.5%, 13.6%, and 12.2% respectively that could result in a full scale revolt in the short term.
Unemployment & Underemployment
The statistics of effected Arab countries depict that people particularly youth was suffering from fairly high rate of unemployment as well as underemployment. The global economic crises also made the employment situation further worse in such countries.
Political & Religious Oppression
Another prominent reason of Arab spring was the massive political and religious oppression in such countries. Puppets of western countries were ruling in these countries. People hated Israel but Arab rulers were Puppets of Israel, People loved religion but rulers were secular, these sorts of things led to the massive restlessness among the masses.
Dictatorship was also a common root cause of Arab Revolt; people had no participation in the selection of their rulers. People liked democratic values but had no freedom of expression and participation in government. This oppression led people to the streets and they kicked their rulers out.
If we look carefully there was clearly a massive foreign interference in the countries affected by Arab Spring. As the puppets of the western world were ruling in such countries that used to act as instructed by their western masters, it gave rise to a sense of humiliation and disrespect among the massed and as a result we they showed their anger during the Arab spring. The interference of the western world was pretty obvious on in the issue of Palestine. In future Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, Algeria, Iraq and Bahrain can also be the fresh victims of such revolt if the situation remains unchanged.
Kleptocracy refers to a thievery and criminal mindset of rulers. Libya, Tunisia, Egypt and other affected countries are blessed with natural resources and the dictators were looting the wealth of people carelessly. The ordinary citizens of these countries were getting more and poorer but the dictators were getting richer and richer that gave rise to anger among the masses.
In order to strengthen the rule, dictators of many Arab countries had made their countries’ police states. There were so many compulsions and restrictions on the common citizens of countries, the divide between the ruling and citizen class was too obvious.
