We mentioned before that Omar Ebn Al Khattab chose six men to gather and choose one man to be the Caliph, after his death and the men were Othman Ebn Affan, Aly Ebn Abi Taleb, Saad Ebn Abi Wakkas, Talha Ebn Obaid Allah, Al Zubair Ebn Alawam and Abdulrahman Ebn Auf.
The six men gathered in the house of Al Sayeda Aisha (the wife of the Prophet Mohammed peace be upon him). In the beginning of the meeting, the six men were silent and they couldn’t talk, but Abdulrahman Ebn Auf said “who would like to get out of this?”, which means who doesn’t want the position?, and then he said “I will be out”. He asked again “who would like to get out of this?” and then he asked Saad Ebn Abi Wakkas “O Saad, would like to be out of this?” and Saad replied “yes”. Abdulrahman said “my cousin and I are out, so do you delegate men to choose the Caliph and I will be consulting you?”, so the rest of the men said “yes”.
The men went out and then Abdulrahman Ebn Auf asked Aly Ebn Abi Taleb to come in and he asked him “If I’m not going to choose you and I asked you to choose one of the six men, who would you choose?” Aly Ebn Abi Taleb said “Othman Ebn Affan“, so Abdulrahman thanked him and then he spoke with Othman Ebn Affan to ask “If I’m not going to choose you and I asked you to choose one of the six men, who would you choose?”. Othman said “Aly Ebn Abi Taleb”, so Abdulrahman thanked him.
Abdulrahman Ebn Auf asked the same question to Al Zubair Ebn Alawam and he replied “Othman Ebn Affan“. Saad Ebn Abi Wakkas also replied “Othman Ebn Affan” when he was asked the same question. The majority chose Othman Ebn Affan to be the Caliph, but Abdulrahman Ebn Auf insisted to be more sure, so he went out to ask the people of Al Madina and he continued to ask for three days. Most of the people chose Othman Ebn Affan to be the Caliph, and this was a true type of democracy in electing the ruler. Do you see now how Islam represented democracy and freedom in choosing the rule in old ages? I can ask the West now to stop claiming that they were the first to implement democracy in their lands.
