Islam is the only religion in the world that provides rights to every group of people. Every right, obligation and duty has a proper justification in Islam. Nothing is meaningless in Islam. Islam provides equal rights to men and women. Holy Quran also states that men and women are equal. Rights of man, woman, Muslim, Non-Muslims, children, parents, relatives are properly explained in Holy Quran. Holy Quran and Al-Hadith of Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) are the only sources of information for the whole world.
Before the advent of Islam, women were treated worse than slaves. Allah said in Holy Quran, “And when the news of (the birth of) a female (child) is brought to any of them, his face become dark, and he is filled with inward grief! He hides himself from the people because of the evil of that whereof he has been informed. Shall he keep her with dishonor or bury her in the earth? Certainly, evil is their decision.” (Al-Nabi)
This was the condition of women in Arabia. Condition of women in India, Egypt and other countries was not different. They were not even regarded as human beings. Islam gave them all the fundamental human rights.
Islam is the only religion that provides respect to the women. In the past, women were considered inferior to men.
Women constitute half of the population in the world. They can also play an important role in the development of society. Islam stresses on the education of women because an educated woman can also educate her children. Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) used to say, “Acquisition of knowledge is obligatory for all Muslims (Muslim).”
We can easily imagine the importance of education for women by this hadith. “The one, who properly educate a slave girl, teaches her discipline, good manners, declares her free and then go for marrying her, will have double rewards.”
Women are not restricted from adopting any profession in Islam. The perception, that Islam deprives women of their rights and defines a house as the only place for them, is totally wrong. Hazrat Khadija was the first wife of Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). She was a famous business woman of Al-Quraish. Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) used to take her goods to Syria for Business. Hazrat Kaiba Bint-i-Saad Al-Aslamia was the first female doctor of Islam. She used to cure wounded soldiers in war time.
Islam has also given the right of vote to women in family consultation and other matters. They are allowed to vote in political issues and other consultation.
Islam has given the women the right to marry a man of her own choice. Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) had also sought her daughter’s consent before arranging her marriage with Hazrat Ali (R.A). Marriage of Hazrat Khadija and Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) is also an example of women’s right in Islam.
Islam is the only religion that gives inheritance rights to women. Allah said in Quran, “There is a share for men and share for women from what is left by parents and those nearly related, whether, the property be small or large—–a legal share.” (Sura An-Nissa)
When a Muslim woman goes out in public, she is required to dress up in a special way. This certain way of dressing is called Hijaab. In Hijaab women are required to cover their whole body except face, hands and feet. This special dress is just for the safety of women so that they shall be respected everywhere in the world.
