Valentines Day in Islam

The fundamentals of Islam are presented in a crystal clear manner. Islam is a religion of altruism, encouraging the sentiments of love and benevolence. Devotion of Muslims is to be directed towards Almighty Allah, who they believe is the creator of this world and encompasses all the mercy. As Muslims ,we ought to follow the teachings of Islam if we want to live a happy and benevolent life. Islam has not prescribed a particular day of each year to spread the notion of love. In the Holy Quran, Allah says:  “The believers are naught else than brothers. Therefore, make peace between your brethren and observe your duty to Allah that haply ye may obtain mercy.” (Al-Hujurat 49: 10)

Although Valentine’s Day is a means used by many around the world to express their love to others, it has no place in Islam. Islam requires a higher level of love for religious personages than ourselves and the people we know. Allah and Prophet Muhammad are to be loved more than ourselves.

Looking back at the origins of Valentine’s Day, it has practically no connection with Islam. Over 17 centuries ago, Pagan Romans started a festival of love in which they expressed their spiritual love towards their gods. It was widely believed that Romulus, the founder of Rome, was bitten by a she-wolf. This gave him a lot of strength and wisdom, and so the people of Rome would celebrate on 14th February every year. The myths of these festivals passed onto Christians in future generations, who then created Valentine’s Day as we now know it.

Valentines Day in Islam

As we can see that Valentine’s Day originated as a result of Roman event and it shares no ties with Islam. Muslims are well aware of teachings of Islam and Valentine’s Day in Islam holds no place. Islam does not promote the imitation of other’s rituals in order to bring the people close to one another. Valentine’s Day in Islam can’t be adjusted for bringing worlds together as Islam is a complete code of life that requires no innovation or “bid”.

Valentine’s Day in Islam can’t make difference at all, just in case few minds think that it will bring any sort of peace or prosperity. Islam is a vast religion that allows Muslims to love one another throughout their lives and not just one day. The expression of love must be celebrated enormously rather waiting for a day to be told.

Valentine’s Day in Islam is nothing more than an innovation inserted by weak believers who have no ground knowledge about the basics of Islam. Islam rejects the concept of innovation or superstitions which can bring happiness to our lives. Therefore, this innovated holiday up hold no place in Shariah. Muslims must condemn Valentine’s Day since it is an immoral practice and it should not get into the hearts and minds of those who consider themselves righteous believers of Islam.

One of the major setbacks of Valentine’s Day is that an exorbitant amount of money is spent to express love towards others. Islam would prefer its followers to spend money to help the poor and needy. Young people often celebrate this day with their significant others, but since such extramarital relations are not allowed in Islam, Muslims should refrain from celebrating Valentine’s Day.

Awesome point momo. It is so true. I do appreciate you on highlighting this. Only those celebrate this who have weak faith in their religion & want to seek pleasure by participating in this event.

Good information…another setback besides the expenditure of money is that this event spreads various fitnah among the muslims, those need to be avoided and understood by all muslims especially the youngsters.
